Getting Around Koh Samui Without a Scooter

Two visitors on a rented scooter on a Thai street

You do not need a scooter on Koh Samui. Grab and Bolt both run across the island and Grab picks up at the airport, shared songthaew trucks loop the ring road for 50 to 100 baht a hop, taxis go anywhere for a price you agree first, and the places most people want are 13 to 23 minutes from Chaweng by road.

Grab

Grab lists Samui among the places its cars run in southern Thailand, alongside Surat Thani, Phuket and Krabi, and it has a dedicated pickup point at the airport, the Arrival Entrance. Its own page puts the average fare between the airport and the centre of Samui at 200 to 350 baht for a 15-minute ride. The price shows before you book.

Grab also offers GrabBike, a motorbike taxi, for one person with a small bag. And it sells a driver by the hour, called Rent, from 500 baht for two hours, with 4, 8 and 12-hour packages, which is the cheapest way to see the north coast or the waterfalls without riding yourself.

Bolt also runs on Samui, even though its own cities page does not list the island. Having both apps installed means a second quote and a second pool of drivers when one is quiet.

Songthaews

The pickup trucks with bench seats in the back are the island's bus. They run fixed loops around the ring road through the day, and you flag one down, tell the driver where you are going, and pay when you get off. Expect 50 to 100 baht for a hop between neighbouring beaches, more for a longer run. There is no posted fare, so confirm the price before you climb in; the quote to a tourist is often higher than the local one.

Songthaews suit the daytime run between Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut along the ring road.

Taxis

Agree the price before you get in, and use Grab's fare as your reference: if Grab says 300 baht for the ride, that is what the ride is worth. Hotels can arrange a taxi at a fixed price, which is the calm option late at night.

How far things are

Road distances and drive times from Central Samui in the middle of Chaweng, in normal traffic.

From Chaweng toDistanceDrive
Samui airport4 kmabout 13 minutes
Fisherman's Village, Bophut5.6 kmabout 13 minutes
Choeng Mon Beach6.3 kmabout 14 minutes
Wat Plai Laem and Big Buddha6 kmabout 15 minutes
Maenam Beach9.3 kmabout 20 minutes
Lamai Beach11 kmabout 23 minutes
Na Muang Waterfall20 kmabout 36 minutes
Nathon pierabout 24 kmabout 40 minutes

Chaweng traffic on a busy evening adds time to all of these. Lamai to the airport is 14.5 km and about half an hour, which matters on the last day.

Which beach to stay on if you will not ride

Without a scooter, where you sleep decides most of your trip, because every outing starts with a ride.

Chaweng. The one beach where you can walk to everything: the sand, the restaurants, the mall. The busiest, and the best base for anyone not riding.

Bophut and Fisherman's Village. A walkable village street of restaurants and cafes, a calmer beach, and the Friday night market on the street itself from 17:00 to 22:00. Thirteen minutes from Chaweng.

Lamai. A walkable centre and a good beach, twenty-odd minutes from Chaweng. Songthaews run between the two through the day.

Maenam and Choeng Mon. Quiet and pleasant, and a Grab away from anything else. Fine for a quiet beach holiday, and expensive in rides for anything else.

Getting to the ferries

Bangrak pier, where Seatran and Lomprayah leave for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, is 11 minutes from the airport and about the same from north Chaweng. Lomprayah's other piers are Pralarn at Maenam, about 20 minutes from Chaweng, and Nathon on the far side, about 40. Both operators sell tickets with a hotel or airport pickup included, which removes the transfer question entirely. Times and prices are in the ferry guide and, for the airport specifically, in Samui airport to the ferry.

Day trips without your own wheels

The two temples in the northeast, Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem, are one Grab out and one back, 15 minutes each way, and an hour on the ground. Na Muang waterfall is 36 minutes inland; a Grab Rent driver for two hours covers it with time to swim. Ang Thong Marine Park, the north coast drive, and the waterfalls together are what the 4-hour Rent package is for.
