Self Storage in Koh Samui: What to Know Before Renting a Room

Most travelers passing through Koh Samui need a locker for a few hours. Some people need a room instead: their own key, their own schedule, for weeks or months at a time. That is a different product with its own set of questions, and its own prices: at our shop in Chaweng a private room is 9,000 baht a month with no deposit, and a monthly locker is 2,500 or 3,000.
Who needs self storage in Koh Samui?
More people on the island need month-scale storage than you would guess. The four we see most:
Expats and long-stay residents heading off-island for a few weeks who don't want to move everything out of their accommodation. Furniture, bikes, equipment, and personal belongings sit cleanly in a private room without involving a landlord.
People between accommodations. If you're moving between rentals, have a gap between check-out and check-in, or are waiting for a new place to be ready, a storage room fills the gap without forcing you to rush.
Small business owners and vendors. Samui has a steady population of people running pop-up operations, market stalls, or seasonal businesses. A room they can open themselves, without ringing anyone first, is usually what they are after.
Long-stay travelers who've accumulated more than fits in a locker. After a few months on the island, things add up. A private room handles the overflow cleanly.
What is a self storage room?
A self storage room is a private, lockable space that is yours for the rental period. You have your own key. Nobody else accesses the room without your permission. You can come and go during facility hours without checking in with staff each time.
Managed storage means staff handle your items for you. Left luggage means checking bags in and out at a counter. A self storage room is neither: it is your own space, and the key is yours.
Your options at Samui Luggage Storage
Two products cover most needs, and both live in the same air-conditioned building in Chaweng.
Monthly lockers. A small locker (50 × 70 × 80 cm) holds two small suitcases or one large, and rents for 2,500 baht per month. A large locker (70 × 80 × 100 cm) usually takes three large bags and rents for 3,000 baht per month. Your own locker, your own code, no deposit.
Private rooms. A room 2.7 by 5.4 metres, about 14.6 square metres, with solid walls, a door and a key only you hold. Air conditioned and ventilated during opening hours, with CCTV covering the floor around the clock. A room is 9,000 baht per month with no commitment, 8,550 per month on a 3-month term, 8,100 on 6 months, and 7,650 on 12 months. No deposit, and you can leave on 30 days notice after the first month.
What else is available?
Dedicated self storage on Koh Samui is a small market with only a handful of facilities. Check access hours, air conditioning and notice terms rather than assuming they are standard.
What to look for
Before you commit to a room, check four things:
Security. CCTV in the corridor and on the facility perimeter matters more than a fancy lock on the door. Ask what camera coverage looks like before signing anything.
Access hours. Some facilities have limited hours. If you need early morning or late evening access, confirm this upfront.
Contract terms. A monthly rolling contract with reasonable notice to end is standard. Be wary of long lock-in periods with no exit clause, or large deposits that are difficult to recover.
Climate. Koh Samui is hot and humid year-round. If you're storing electronics, documents, instruments, or fabric, ask about ventilation in the room.
Location. For frequent access, proximity to where you live or work matters. Count how often you will go, then add the drive to it.
Tips before you sign
Photograph the room before moving anything in. Document the condition so there's no dispute about pre-existing damage when you leave.
Clarify the notice period. One month's notice to end the rental is standard. If you're not sure how long you'll need the space, make sure you're not locked into a longer commitment.
Think about access frequency. If you'll be in and out every few days, location matters a lot. If you're storing items for three months and checking in once, it matters less.
Bring a padlock. Some rooms provide a lock; others expect you to supply your own. Ask in advance.
More storage options
If you only need to store bags for a day or a few days rather than a full room for weeks, see our guide to luggage storage in Koh Samui. Bag storage is priced per bag, per day, with no commitment.
