What to Do in Koh Samui Between Checkout and Your Flight

Tropical beach in Koh Samui

Checkout is usually noon. Flights out of Samui are often in the evening. That leaves you four to eight hours, and most people spend them sitting in a hotel lobby next to their suitcases. Enough time, if the bags are somewhere else, for a last swim, the two temples in the northeast, or with a full day, Ang Thong. The airport is 10 to 15 minutes from Chaweng, so the day ends later than you think.

First: sort your bags

Drag your luggage around and your options shrink to whatever is within walking distance of the hotel. Your hotel may hold the bags if you are staying nearby all day. A storage shop makes more sense if you want to cross the island and come back.

If you have 2 hours or less

Pick one thing and do it properly. Two hours does not survive being split between three places.

A last swim. Chaweng and Lamai are both easy to reach. Chaweng is longer and livelier. Lamai is slightly quieter, and its northern end is the calmer stretch for swimming; the southern end turns rocky around the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks. Either works for a final hour in the sea. Rinse off, grab a coconut from a beach vendor, and you're done.

A good meal. Eating well on your last day costs almost nothing if you go local. The market stalls along Chaweng's side streets serve pad kra pao, khao man gai, and boat noodles for 60-80 baht. Skip the tourist strip for this one.

Coffee and do nothing. There are several cafes along the Chaweng beachfront road. Order something cold and sit. You have been moving for however many days.

If you have a half day (3-5 hours)

Big Buddha and Wat Plai Laem. The two most visited temples on the island are both in the northeast, about 15 to 20 minutes from Chaweng by taxi or Grab. Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) is a 12-metre gold statue on a small island reached by a causeway, ringed with stalls selling food and souvenirs. Even if you have seen enough temples this trip, we would still send you.

A five-minute drive from Big Buddha is Wat Plai Laem, which is less visited and more interesting: a lake temple with a giant 18-armed goddess statue and a Chinese-style pavilion. Fish food is 10 baht a bag from the machines by the lake, and feeding them is the ritual here. If you only go to one temple on the whole trip, make it this one. Dress code applies at both: shoulders and knees covered.

Fisherman's Village, Bophut. The old village street is low-rise wooden shophouses, cafes and restaurants, about 15 to 20 minutes from Chaweng and a slower pace than here. The Friday night market is the reason most people make the trip, and it only runs on Friday.

Na Muang Waterfall. If you're comfortable on a scooter or want to share a taxi for a bit of nature, Na Muang is inland about 30 to 35 minutes from Chaweng, or 20 minutes from Lamai. There are two waterfalls. The lower one, Na Muang 1, is a five-minute walk from the road with no climbing, and there is a natural pool at the base. Locals swim here, which tells you most of what you need to know.

If you have a full day (6+ hours)

Ang Thong Marine Park. A full checkout day is the only kind of day this fits into. Ang Thong is a national marine park about 30 km northwest of Samui: limestone islands, snorkelling, sea kayaking, and a viewpoint over the whole archipelago. Boats leave around 8am and are back by 5pm. The 300 baht national park fee is usually cash on top of the tour price, and the park normally closes from 1 November to 15 December. You have to book it the day before and drop your bags first thing, and it eats the entire day. It also gets you back in time for an evening flight.

Rent a scooter and go north. The north coast road from Bophut to Maenam to Nathon is one of the quieter, more scenic drives on Samui. Less touristy, more local. Stop at whatever looks interesting. The west coast near Nathon faces the sunset, with the Ang Thong islands on the horizon. Only do this if you are confident on a scooter. Traffic thins out once you are past Chaweng.

Eat your way through the day. Khao tom (rice soup) at a shophouse for breakfast, a market for lunch, coffee at one of the specialty cafes that have opened around Bophut and Maenam in the last few years, then a last dinner somewhere you never got to.

Getting to the airport

Koh Samui Airport is in the northeast of the island, which is convenient from Chaweng (about 10-15 minutes) and less convenient from the south or west (30-45 minutes). Grab works reliably in Samui for airport runs, or your hotel can arrange a taxi.

Be at the counter 90 minutes before a domestic flight and two hours before an international one. Bangkok Airways closes check-in 40 minutes before domestic departures and 50 minutes before international ones. The airport is small, but Bangkok Airways owns it and runs most of the flights, so queues at its desks can stack up. Security is fast; the terminal is manageable; the food options airside are limited to kiosks and small cafes.

Don't cut it fine. The drive is predictable; the check-in queue is not. Coming from Koh Phangan or Koh Tao on the day of your flight? The boat-to-flight timings are in Samui airport to the ferry.

A note on timing

Most people underestimate the day. Lamai to the airport with bags, after a swim and lunch, is not the same trip as leaving straight from a hotel lobby. Build in margin.
